Maybe this is a crazy question, but how did Europeans know what Africans looked like? I know that some of the paintings here are of North Africans/Middle Easterners, but others clearly depict people born south of the Sahara. I've heard of Prester John but I never imagined that medieval Europeans were aware that Prester John would have had brown skin. Am I missing something?

medievalpoc:

Like. There are a lot of things I could say here. But I’m just going to do my best to answer your question, and the answer is either very simple or very complicated, depending on your current point of view.

1. “They” knew what people with brown skin looked like because people with brown skin had been there literally THE ENTIRE TIME. Some (and father back, ALL) of “them” had brown skin themselves.

2. “People with Brown Skin” and “Europeans” are not separate and mutually exclusive groups.

3. No matter how far back you go, the mythical time that you’re looking for, when all-white, racially and culturally isolated Europe was “real”, will continue to recede from your grasp until it winkles out the like imaginary place it is.

We can just keep going back. In every area, from all walks of life, rich and poor, kings and peasants, artists and iconoclasts, before there were countries and continents, before there were white people.

The time when “EVERYONE” in Europe was White does not exist. They knew what people with brown skin looked like because they were there. They knew what “Africans” looked like because they were there, and they weren’t “they”, they were us, or you. I think what you’re missing is something that never existed.

Go Forth and Educate Yourselves!

I’d also highly recommend watching the Jane Elliot Brown-eye/Blue-eye experiments, which can be found here:

Not only should you educate yourself but use this for good. Look around you and help others who don’t have this privilege. Hiring, donating, community service, etc.

After this post went viral, the original artist had to delete their tumblr because they were inundated with death threats.

There were people more offended by this comic than offended by the existence of racial disparities—to the point where they threatened this artist’s life.

I really hope she’s able to complete this, man I cannot believe *SPOILER ALERT* That Ren died!!

White person: let's go eat sushi

Also

I don’t accept messages from people I DON’T follow so ignore/block me all you want. This is a common white person who is called on their ignorance, instead of learning from it they run and hide and play victim.
So you cannot message me, sorry…no not sorry at all. Bye bye!@x-sophrosyne

She tried to block me because she’s embarrassed

@x-sophrosyne
I’m not at all being rude, I’m just not kissing your ass or trying to pamper you. I notice it’s a common trend amongst white people who are called out on their ignorance ignoring everyone who disagrees with to find that ONE person who agrees (one out one hundred) and thinking that holds any weight. To prove my point further, they were so polite to you…but you STILL ignored them! HAHAHA ahhh
Yeah, that’s EXACTLY my point - since you and a lot of white people in the U.S are disassociated from your own cultures you clearly don’t understand cultural significance and have zero respect for that (you said it yourself, you don’t respect it so its JUST a hairstyle to you). You have proven that point PERFECTLY so no it’s not “well since I have no heritage I can copy it”, is that really your attempt at a thought process? If that’s the case then you must think if something in a store doesn’t have a price tag on it then it must be free - seriously let’s not even go there because I’m already simplifying my argument as it is.
And this “mixing pot” theory is just that - theory since you actually have to, you know, ASSOCIATE with other groups to have this mixing of cultures that you’re repeating. Most white people in the U.S don’t mix with other cultures, it is common knowledge that white people SEGREGATE themselves from everyone else. Almost 50% of white people have NO FRIENDS OF COLOR (an article about that came out a few months ago).
Very few white people intermingle and try to learn RESPECTFULLY about other cultures. Since PoC are normally treated as a stereotype of their group PoC tend to avoid white people or put on a grin and bear it till they can’t take it anymore.
You didn’t get your hair styled by a black person, you didn’t get educated about natural hair/locs from any black people you personally know (because it sounds like you don’t) yet you want to preach this “melting pot” bs as if it’s impressive. And sushi is not “Asian” (as in it does not represent all 54 countries of Asia) its Japanese, as popular and widespread sushi is you STILL can’t name the country it comes from? Again, my point is being proven - lack of heritage extends to lack of respect for other cultures.
No eating sushi is not cultural appropriation, and you asking tells me you don’t fully understand the meaning of cultural appropriation which is discussed on here and Wikipedia has a page about it. Since you’re all about “mixing in the melting pot” I would hope you’re actually not just full of shit about learning.
Yes please use the changing times to EDUCATE YOURSELF (no I am not your teacher, PoC are not obligated to teach anyone period, especially someone whose more concerned with being right than be respectful because learning actually consists of listening and critical thinking).

Your blog says you’re in college, why can’t you take a course on this? Why are you unable to seek out articles and essays about this? Why wouldn’t you want to study more about this on your own? White Americans are CONSTANTLY preaching their “melting pot/cultural exchange” perspectives but you can’t specify what country sushi comes from?
As ignorant as you are on these subjects, you have to pay someone to educate you on these matters (you know, classes).
